In Platoââ¬â¢s Symposium and Johann Wolfgang von Goetheââ¬â¢s The Sorrows of Young Werther, the two protagonists are overcome by their love and dedicate an eulogy in the form of a speech or a series of letters to their beloved. The multitude of letters composed by Werther to Lotte is praised as one of the great loves in literary history worthy of inspiring a new trend of blue coats; while the drunken speech composed by Alcibiades to his love Socrates is deemed yet another ââ¬Å"common loveâ⬠dominated by nothing more than lust and passion. Despite seemingly irreconcilable differences between the two loves exhibited by Alcibiades and Werther, both eulogies delivered by the two men are ultimately testaments to loveââ¬â¢s ability to free them from constrictions, inspire, elevate, and bless them with a livelier existence. The power love possesses does not discriminate between common and celestial love as demonstrated by Alcibiades and Wertherââ¬â¢s newfound ability to br eak the confinements that previously limited their actions and speech. Both Plato and Goethe uses a state of intoxication to describe the freedom of speaking and acting without the limiting constraints of internal and external social standards. Alcibiades admits that ââ¬Å"truth comes from wineâ⬠(Plato, 64) and yet no one has ever seen Socrates drunk. A contrast is established between Alcibiades, a man in love, and Socrates, a man merely in the presence of love. The power of love permeates only the mindset of Alcibiades and destroys the emotional defenses that previously controlled and limited his actions. Werther also recognizes societyââ¬â¢s derision of actions that are ââ¬Å"remotely free or noble or out of the ordinaryâ⬠by attributing the cause to intoxication, and in turn places the shame upon the ââ¬Å"sensibleâ⬠people (Goethe, 61). Love grants the necessary strength for those in love to erode away their defenses and enables them to become true to their actions and words. Loveââ¬â¢s power extends beyond the ability to give strength to those in love and allow them to become true to themselves, but rather elevates those in love to an inspired and divine state. Plato and Goethe both utilize music to illustrate the divine effects of love. When Socrates exhibits his enchanting abilities on his instrument, Alcibiades depicts the effect as the equivalent of ââ¬Å"casting a spellâ⬠and demonstrates Socratesââ¬â¢s ability to ââ¬Å"[reach] for the Godsâ⬠(Plato, 61). The memory of Lotte playing the piano is equally enchanting for Werther as he describes her musical abilities as ââ¬Å"angelic skillâ⬠and capable of dissipating all of Wertherââ¬â¢s pains and sorrows (Goethe, 53). Alcibiades and Werther both recognize the powerful effects of love when it is elevated with the effects of spell-binding music. While music heightens the experience of love, love heightens the mortal states of the two men in love. Alcibiade s and Werther both use descriptions of heaven to indicate their transcendence beyond mortal human limitations into a magical state of celestial divinity rooted in the inspiration from their loved ones, Socrates and Lotte. Once Alcibiades and Werther has experienced the strength and divine inspiration attributed to the power of love, the two men become incapable of living without love. Alcibiades proclaims his dedication to Socrates by promising his willingness to spend the remainder of his life ââ¬Å"sitting there at [Socrateââ¬â¢s] feetâ⬠since Alcibiades claims his life was ââ¬Å"saved by one man and one man alone- Socratesâ⬠(Plato, 68). Since Socrates demonstrated his power to inject a newfound liveliness into Alcibiadesââ¬â¢s life, Alcibiades refuses to live without love in his life, and becomes willing to dedicate the rest of his life just to be in close proximity with the one he loves. For Werther, the mere effect of hearing Lotteââ¬â¢s voice is power eno ugh to help him ââ¬Å"recover [his] self-possessionâ⬠and Werther demonstrates his appreciation for Lotteââ¬â¢s divine effects upon him by proclaiming ââ¬Å"what an Angel! I shall live for you!â⬠(Goethe, 49). The power love and Lotte yields has outweighed his own ability to control his ââ¬Å"self-possessionâ⬠, therefore Werther praises Lotteââ¬â¢s divine powers to elevate him beyond mortal constraints when Werther is in Lotteââ¬â¢s presence. Lotteââ¬â¢s ability to grant Werther the strength and elevation he cannot provide for himself causes Werther to dedicate his life to Lotteââ¬â¢s existence since it is worthless without her. Both Alcibiades and Werther becomes dependent upon love for providing their newfound inner-strength and temporary elevation into euphoria that the two men deem their mortal life unworthy without the presence of their lovers. Love permeates the lives of Alcibiades and Werther and injects strength, inspiration, and a livelier e xistence into their lives, however, while Alcibiades is truly in love with Socrates for who he is, Wertherââ¬â¢s love towards Lotte is based selfishly upon what Lotte can do for him. Both Socrates and Lotteââ¬â¢s words exert such a great influence upon Alcibiades and Werther that the two men in love shed tears from the power of their words. Alcibiades admits ââ¬Å"tears floodâ⬠from his eyes because the words of Socrates yields the power to ââ¬Å"change my outlookâ⬠and cause Alcibiades to look inward and deem the life he leads not ââ¬Å"worth livingâ⬠(Plato, 61). Werther also sheds tears from the words of Lotte. When Lotte exclaims the name of an ode ââ¬Å"Klopstockâ⬠, Werther ââ¬Å"[remembers] the glorious odeâ⬠and in turn ââ¬Å"[sheds] tears of the greatest joyâ⬠(Plato, 43). Plato claims only men in love are capable of experiencing shame out of fear of disappointing their lovers. Socrates is the only man capable of causing Alcibiades t o experience shame, and Alcibiades sheds tears out of the powerful and life-changing context of his words. However, Werther thinks only of the happiness Lotte brings him and sheds tears of happiness once Lotte validates their similarities with the shared love of an ode named Klopstock. While Alcibiades experiences deep emotion from words that originate from Socrates, Werther is deeply moved by their shared appreciation for an ode composed by a different man. While Alcibiades appreciates Socrates for being original and the man he is, Werther appreciates Lotte for the similarities she shares with Werther, as well as past lovers of Werther. Alcibiades speaks to the originality Socrates possesses by claiming he is so ââ¬Å"out of the ordinalâ⬠that no one ââ¬Å"remotely resembles himâ⬠(Plato, 69). However, when Werther describes Lotte, the adjectives Werther uses are reminiscent of the adjectives he used to describe a previous lover. Werther describes both Lotte and his pre vious love as possessors of ââ¬Å"so much simplicity with so much understanding, so much goodnessâ⬠(Goethe, 46). The only difference between Lotte and his previous love is that Lotte contributes ââ¬Å"true life and vitalityâ⬠whereas the woman he was previously in love with is dead (Goethe, 46). Werther subconsciously falls in love with Lotte in order to provide a replacement for the woman he previously loved up until her death. Werther also constantly refers to Lotte as an angel and associates her with heaven, showing his overwhelming fascination with the celestial divinity and God-like abilities to transcend the limitations applicable to human beings. The love exhibited by Alcibiades also differs in the love shown by Werther past originality but also in elements of independence and longevity. While Alcibiades strives to become the best man he can become and looks to Socrates for guidance since ââ¬Å"no one offers more effective assistance in thisâ⬠(Plato, 65) . However, Werther loves the way Lotte increases his self-confidence and creates a mirage of celestial ability since Werther ââ¬Å"worships myself ever since she loves meâ⬠(Goethe, 53). This elevated state of false greatness is only temporary until Lotte reminds Werther of her love for Albert, and then Werther suffers and ââ¬Å"feels as if I had been stripped of all honourâ⬠(Goethe, 53). Alcibiades is willing to independently achieve self-greatness whereas Werther relies purely upon Lotte for a mirage of self-greatness. Alcibiades strives to become a better man for Socrates to avoid shame but Werther is only concerned with his own feelings of self-worship. Finally, Alcibiades strives for permanent improvement in his character and morals while Werther shows his concern for the temporary improvement. Even though Werther claims he needs to be constantly around Lotte, it is not to better her existence but rather to prolong the image of his own elevated self worth. While Al cibiades selflessly dedicates his life to the man he loves by pledging to spend the remainder of his life at Socratesââ¬â¢s feet, Werther selfishly depends on Lotte for replacing a former love Werther lost to death, injecting liveliness into his previously dull life, and for lending him the power to transcend human limitations and temporarily achieve a God-like state. Even though the power of love permeates the lives of all of those in love, only certain men in love are worthy of the benefits love provides. Both Alcibiades and Werther demonstrate similar symptoms of being in love and share the strength, inspiration, and celestial elevation love lends. However, the differences between the way they describe their relations with their loved ones distinguish the difference between Alcibiades who is truly in love with Socrates for his originality and power to inflict shame upon Alcibiades, from Werther, who loves immortality and the benefits love provides more than he loves Lotte. Lot te is merely a tool used to provide a replacement for previous loves, transcend mortal limitations and achieve a God-like state, and act as a validation for his own life. The true gauge of the worthiness of lovers depends on whether they dedicate their lives to love, or seek love in order to temporarily resolve issues and indulges in the pleasures it provides.

Corporal punishment is a very controversial topic that is being discussed amongst educators across the nation. Corporal punishment refers to any physical form of punishment, but in this case it refers to in schools. Currently there are many different terms used to label corporal punishment, for example, it has been called spanking, paddling, caning, lashing, popping, smacking, whipping or beating. Each term carries its own different meaning, but they all represents some form of corporal punishment. More than anything, corporal punishment is an ineffective means of discipline, because the same student are repeatedly the recipients of it. Corporal punishment does not teach the child appropriate behavior, but only brings forth undesirable behavior. Some youth wil learn from the example and demonstrate aggressive, harmful behavior themselves. Schools have a responsibility to model for and teach our youths methods of exerting authority and modifying behaviors that are constructive, humane, and provide opportunities for growth, and I do not believe corporal punishment helps do any of these. In 1992, an examination of the evidence led Ohios State Board of Education to adopt a resolution against corporal punishment. The Board urged the Ohio General Assembly to put into action a legislation consistent with the resolution. That following year, the same evidence caused the assembly to pass, and the Governor to sign, a law banning corporal punishment in public schools unless individual school districts take specific steps to retain it. Because in schools in those places have developed an effective alternative means of discipline, there should be no problem with Ohio changing. Questions: 1.What It Means For An Auditor To Be Independent? 2.How Can An Auditor Be Independent When Being Paid By The Client? Answers: Introduction When it comes to conducting an audit of a client for which he or she is being paid, the theory of independence in the conduct of work plays a lead role. The auditor independence is crucial from the view point of an external auditor. An auditors independence is coupled with truthfulness and impartiality in the approach of the audit process. Thus the profession desires the professional to carry on the work of the audit in an independent manner thus ensuring that his work is not impacted by any such acts of the client which would bring disrepute to the profession. The said essay focuses upon the fact as to what does independence in the field of auditing mean and how can he or she carry on the work of an audit independently without any biasness, specifically when the client is paying him for the work. This is the area wherein the auditors independence is seen to be at risk as is rightly narrated by Reiter and Williams in their journal article named The philosophy and rhetoric of auditor independence concepts. As is rightly said by them, the audit work should be conducted in a free manner is generally seen to be in trouble simply because of the financial arrangement that they have with the client. Thus the essay mainly emphasises upon this area, describing about how an auditor can behave and act independently in spite of being paid by the client (Kueppers, Sullivan, 2010). 1. The first question that arises while conducting an audit is whether the same is being done in an independent manner or not. The main objective behind getting the audit of a company is to express an opinion which is impartial, unbiased and dependable in nature for those who are utilising the said opinion to take investment related decisions or regulatory decisions. Thus for an auditor to be independent in his opinion he is required to be independent from his mind as well as in his conduct (Elliott, Jacobson, 2006). By the former it means that the auditor should have such a mind set that allows him to express an opinion in such a state wherein he is not being impacted by any undue influences that would compromise on his expert judgement thus giving room for an individual to perform his functions of an audit with integrity and objectivity. The latter defines that an auditors appearance plays a very important role in the independence. If he appears to be independent in his conduct to the client, then his chances of missing out on material information also minimises (Fearnley et.al. 2005). As per AU 220 of AICPA defines the auditor independence as an auditor being unbiased and unprejudiced with regards the client else the professional would have to compromise on the impartiality which is a must for the dependability of his opinions irrespective of the technical proficiency that the auditor may possess (Fontaine Pilote, 2012). Further to this the International Federation of Accountants lays down a ruling that those who are part of the assurance team should always pursue to find out any possible conflicts and threats to independence, evaluate the same with regards the impact of the same on the conduct of the work and if the threats are very significant then the auditor should try to eliminate such threats so as to bring it down to an acceptable level. However if the same cannot be done so then the auditor should refuse to conduct the audit. The auditors independence can be of two types i.e. actual and perceived. As the word actual means definite, auditor independence in the actual sense means that the same is visible and is straight forward. If the auditor has any kind of a financial relationship with the client apart from the audit fees that he is to receive in lieu of the work he performs, then the auditors actual independence is said to be hindered (Almer, Olazabal, 2001). However perceived independence is to arise when there are shades of grey creep in to the normally black and white world of audit. Thus it simply means that due to a linkage between the auditor and the audit client it may seem that there is an agreement between the two and thus it is in such a circumstance that the professional judgement plays a vital role (Haste, 2015). It can be rightly said that the issue of auditor acting independently is very pivotal in nature and equally crucial for the profession as well. Independence has become an important auditing standard simply because the opinion stated by an auditor adds to the explanation and creditability of the financials of a company even if the company has not made any such statement which is false and misleading (International Organisation of Securities Commission, 2002). Due to corporate failures such as that of Enron that has occurred in the past, has made the standards related to auditor independence more comprehensive and rigorous. However after such failures also it is understood that the independence needs to be strengthened day in and day out due to the kind of mishaps and bankruptcies which have taken place specially the one which took place was the Global Financial Crisis in the year 2008 with the failing of Lehman Brothers (ASIC 2001). 2. The said issue with regards the fact that the auditor is being paid for the audit being conducted by the client may hamper the independence in his conduct is still unresolved. There have been several doubts with this issue specially with regards the external auditors. Due to the fact that they are being paid by the client for the conduct of their companys audit, thus until and unless a strong corporate governance measure is not put in line, the firm of auditors may express such opinions that are influenced by the desire to maintain good relation with clients so that their work is not taken away. If this is the situation then the fact the opinion would be true and fair becomes questionable and the shareholders are unable to rely on the opinion (Icaew.com., 2016). As is said by Reiter and Williams in the article The philosophy and rhetoric of auditor independence concepts, the metaphor Independence Is Separation has come due to the existence of the separation model which details about the independence of auditors. It says that the various threats which an auditor faces has lead to the requirement of separation so that independence in the conduct of an auditor can be achieved successfully. One such threat is the self interest threat which is said to arise due to the audit fees which an auditor receives from a client for the work being done by him. Secondly, another metaphor used for defining the independence of an auditor with regards the audit fees they receive is Independence As A Matter Of Interest, which states that the financial interest of an audit firm would provide an assurance with regards apt behavioural conduct. There lies an assumption that the independence is widespread simply due to the supremacy of financial inducements for inten tion auditing even after considering the potential prejudice of receiving audit fees, the auditor at the same time also has a dominant attention towards safeguarding the reputation of the audit firm as well. As per the two authors, these principles are basically based on the financial concepts such as materiality and the cost/benefit analysis. The auditing firms at times agree to receive such audit fees which is less than the actual market rate simply to secure the work and further cover up the deficit by conducting various non-audit services for the client. One of the most eminent example which showed the influence of the auditor with regards the audit fees being charged is the case of Enron, when in the year 2000, Anderson had received a fees of $27m for conducting non-audit services in comparison to $25m for the audit conducted. Due to this the company fell down and the reason was the fact that the auditor failed to perform his duties independently and it was proved that the professionals had compromised with the accounting simply to ensue that the work is not given to someone else (corplaw.ie., 2014). Further to this, it is true that the auditors always try to ensure that they are able to retain their clients but the same should be done not by compromising with the audit independence but by extending good service to the client (Franzel, 2014). Thus if the audit fees is significant to the total revenue of a CPA then he would ensure to go out of his way to retain which would also mean compromising on the independence as well. Conclusion Thus on a concluding note it can be rightly said that an auditor should conduct an audit independently, so as to ensure that the profession is not disrespected and the external shareholders are being able to take informed decisions with regards the companys actual performance. Such a reliance is what increases the creditability of both the firm as well as the company. One major threat to auditor independence is the audit fees which has led to various crisis in the past. Thus in order to be independent with regards the audit fees that an auditor receives, he or she should ensure that the fees does not form a significant part of the total earnings of the audit firm. However an auditor should act in a professional manner as without performing the audit function independently, the main reason for such an appointment gets defeated. The Pattern of Organization of Question and Answer Essay TopicsFor many students, the composition of their assignment for the term paper is confusing, and many may be left wondering what type of pattern of organization presents essay topics in order of rising or falling. Fortunately, this particular assignment does not present itself at random. Its meaning can be seen by looking at certain types of patterns, which are outlined below.Essays of a rising pattern usually begin with a question that prompts the writing of an essay on the topic of the current day. They follow the rising trend to a larger length, where the question does not get answered. In some cases, an essay may start with a statement, such as 'one's life today is a study in contrasts,' but it will not have a conclusion and is likely to end at the same time. These essays do not offer a grand plan for the future, rather a simple observation of what is happening to the writer's life today. As the question for an essay turns into the current day, more of the essay is built around themes. This usually means that topics are concerned with some form of action or actionable topic. To this end, any of the following types of patterns can be seen:The rising pattern provides a way for the essay to jump into a conclusion or even forward in time in some cases, making it a pattern of organization presented in question and answer style. These essays contain multiple questions that are answered in the current present and focus on a theme or central theme in the essay.Answers to those questions generally follow the themes from one to the next, allowing the essay to continue on in a linear fashion. When reading essays on the subject of yesterday, for example, there is usually one question per paragraph, ending in a statement of fact. Questions are also asked at the end of each paragraph, ending in an answer, usually of a sentiment such as, 'life can be both wonderful and sad,' or 'we all have times when we wonder how things got so bad.'Rising and falling patterns of organization present the writer with the opportunity to use two or more answers in order to arrive at a conclusion about the topic. Often, they will also reflect a major change in the scene, as a sort of historical moment. The heightening of the question to be answered in the current essay often results in a discussion of a similar question of the past.Although the structure of essay topics can seem overwhelming at first, there are many other ways in which the authors of essays on the subject of yesterday can make them easier to deal with. While some essay writers follow the normal patterns, others can become less predictable and more flexible. These are those who can give their essay topics a more fluid and contemporary feel.In some cases, the answers may also be reflective of a theme in the present and/or future. For example, the words and phrases 'buying now' may point to a feeling of urgency. This suggests that it is not just a m atter of buying now, but also a sense of urgency about the present.
